Most authorities believe that the most common cause of AAA is atherosclerosis, which is one of several degenerative processes that can lead to the condition. The atherosclerotic process causes the buildup of plaque, which alters the integrity of the aortic wall. Ninety percent of AAAs are believed to degenerative in origin; 5% are inflammatory. Other causes include high blood pressure, heredity, connective tissue disorders, trauma, and infections (syphilis, tuberculosis, and endocarditis). Smoking is also a contributing cause.
