PREVENTION. Teach the patient to avoid excessive or prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays. Teach the patient how to protect skin surfaces at risk through appropriate attire and the use of sunscreen preparations. Suggest and support modifications of certain aspects of the patient's lifestyle.

AFTERCARE. Teach the patient proper care of the site(s) after procedures. Teach the patient what to expect from the healing process.

COMPLICATIONS. Teach the patient to watch for abnormal or recurrent postprocedural bleeding and the absence of a normal, healed appearance of the site(s), such as continued raw appearance, enlarged ulceration of site(s), drainage, and tenderness, as well as inflammation. Teach the patient the signs and symptoms that require calling the physician.
