Clinical symptoms rarely appear before the child is 6 months old and occur in both boys and girls. Sickle cell occurs most frequently in African Americans but also occurs in African, Mediterranean, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, and Central American populations. Approximately 1 of 12 African Americans has sickle cell trait. The sickle gene is present in approximately 8% of African Americans, and more than 2 million people in the United States, nearly all of them of African American ancestry, carry the sickle gene.
