Gender Ethnicracial And Life Span Considerations

Mitral insufficiency can occur at any age, depending on the cause. Mitral valve prolapse is more common in females, peaks in the 30s, and is associated with a lower than normal body mass index. Chronic insufficiency increases with age and is therefore more common in the aging population. Mitral valve prolapse is present in approximately 4% of the U.S. population and can be identified through diagnostic tests in about 20% of middle-aged and older adults. Internationally, rheumatic heart disease is the leading cause of mitral insufficiency, but there are no specific ethnic or racial considerations known about the condition.
