Five percent of the population in North America over the age of 65 are affected by stroke. CVA affects men slightly more often than women and is more common after the age of 50, although drug use is causing an increase in CVAs in younger people. Blacks/African Americans have a 2.5 times higher rate of CVA than whites because of the higher incidence of hypertension among African Americans. They also suffer greater physical impairment and are nearly twice as likely to die from stroke as whites.
