Genetic Considerations

Several inherited conditions can result in aplastic anemia. These include Fanconi anemia (autosomal recessive transmission), Dyskeratosis congenita (X-linked recessive is the most common pattern of transmission but autosomal dominant and recessive patterns are also seen), Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (most likely transmission is autosomal recessive), and reticular dysgenesis (the genetic basis is unknown, but both males and females are affected and consanguinity has been seen in some families, suggesting autosomal recessive transmission). There is also a familial aplastic anemia of unspecified type.
