Support the patient's body image and self-esteem by encouraging careful grooming. Explore ways of covering the lesion with clothing or flesh-colored dressings if the lesions are unsightly. Accept the patient's appearance and support a positive self-image by involving her or him in decision-making. Encourage the patient to verbalize fears and concerns; answer any questions, and offer reassurance as appropriate. Offer positive reinforcement for the patient's efforts to adapt to the condition, and remain with the patient during any episodes of increased anxiety or stress. Encourage the patient to interact with other patients who have experienced basal cell epithelioma.

Teach the patient to relieve local inflammation with cool compresses and topical ointments and to maintain correct facial hygiene techniques to prevent bleeding from ulcerations during healing.

Note that patients with BCC require lifelong follow-up care; typical follow-up includes screening for recurrence at 2- to 3-month intervals for 2 years, with annual follow-up afterward. Instruct the patient about lifestyle modifications, especially regarding exposure to sunlight, that can help in preventing recurrence of BCC. Teach patients that prevention of BCC rests with measures to decrease ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. Explain that the peak period of UVR occurs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., warranting protective clothing and use of sunscreen preparations with a protective factor of 15 or more.

Instruct the patient to eat small, high-protein meals frequently and to prepare meals in a blender or augment nutrition with liquid protein supplements if oral lesions make eating difficult.
