Maintain safety measures for patients who develop neuromuscular weakness or lethargy. If the patient's mental status is affected, initiate strategies to maintain an adequate airway, breathing, and circulation. Guard the patient's airway by positioning the patient on his or her side, and keep the patient's mouth free of secretions. If you suspect airway compromise, insert an oral or nasal airway; if airway compromise is accompanied by impaired breathing, notify the physician immediately and prepare for endotracheal intubation.
