Plasminogen and in consequence is only slowly inactivated by a2-antiplasmin. Such clot-bound plasmin displays an average half-life of approximately 1 min.
Overall, therefore, the thrombolytic system has evolved in a self-regulating fashion, which ensures efficient clot degradation while minimizing potential disruption of other elements of the hemostatic system.
