Health Status

There is no standardized instrument to assess health status in individuals with substance use disorders. This lack of instrumentation in a critical area of health care is the result of current health policy, which has shifted emphasis from health status to health care delivery and quality of life. Some general health surveys that are not specific to substance abuse but can be applied to this popu lation are the Nottingham Health Profile (Hunt, McEwen, & McKenna, 1985), the Duke-University of North Carolina Health Profile (Parkerson et al., 1981), and the General Health Survey (Stewart, Hays, & Ware, 1988).
